OUR CHURCH HISTORY

A Legacy of Faith and Service Since 1853

The story of Magnolia First United Methodist Church is one of faith, perseverance, and community—a congregation shaped by grace and sustained by hope.

EARLY BEGINNINGS (1853–1899)

Our church was organized in 1853, and just one year later, on April 18, 1854, a frame structure was erected on the present church grounds for the First Methodist Episcopal Church, South. As the congregation grew, a brick building replaced the frame structure in December 1892.

Tragically, in 1899, a fire swept through the entire Magnolia square, destroying both the town center and the church. Services continued in the old frame building while a new brick facility was built at the corner of Madison and Main Streets. Completed in 1912, that sanctuary served as the congregation’s worship home for nearly fifty years.

GROWTH & EXPANSION (1936–1960)

In 1936, the Leland Clegg Education Building was constructed to support growing ministries of Christian education. The present sanctuary was dedicated on September 25, 1949, marking a new era of worship and fellowship.

By 1954, a second educational wing connected the sanctuary to the Clegg Building, and in 1960, an additional expansion added a fellowship hall, parlor, chapel, kitchen, and classrooms—spaces that fostered community gatherings, learning, and service for generations.

MINISTRY & MISSION (1982–1989)

The 1980s brought a renewed emphasis on outreach. In 1982, the Stewpot Ministry began, serving hot meals three evenings each week to anyone in need—a tradition of compassion that continues today.

In 1987, the church purchased a historic Magnolia home at 311 W. Main Street, expanding the church campus. Two years later, on August 14, 1989, the Child Development Center opened, offering quality weekday care and education for children from infancy through elementary grades—another vital expression of the church’s mission to serve families.

FIRE & RENEWAL (1998–2000)

In 1998, the congregation embarked on an ambitious renovation and building program, updating much of the existing facility and planning a new fellowship hall and children’s center. Just one week before construction was to begin, tragedy struck again. On February 24, 1998, a devastating fire destroyed the chapel, fellowship hall, and kitchen.

Despite the loss, the church family’s faith never wavered. Worship and ministry continued in the remaining spaces, including the Couch Building, originally built as a storage and van facility, which became a hub for youth and adult activities until rebuilding was complete.

By September 1, 1999, the new Fellowship Hall and Children’s Center were consecrated. In November 2000, three key areas of the church were officially named to honor those who shaped the life of the congregation:

  • Peace Fellowship Hall
  • Clegg Chapel
  • Averitt Hall

Together with the entire church campus, these spaces stand as symbols of love, sacrifice, and prayerful perseverance.

Today, Magnolia First United Methodist Church continues to grow in faith and service. As we honor our history, we look to the future with vision and hope, committed to creating new ministries that make a difference in Magnolia and around the world.

Serve Joyfully: With the heart of Christ, we journey alongside the most vulnerable among us, offering care and compassion with joy. (Psalm 100:1 | Nehemiah 8:10 | John 13:14-15 | 1 Peter 4:10)

Lead Courageously: Following Jesus’ example, we resist and dismantle all systems of evil, injustice, and oppression, striving for peace, justice, and reconciliation. (Joshua 1:9 | Ephesians 6:10)

As part of the worldwide United Methodist connection, our church shares more than a name—we share a mission. United Methodists are united by:

  • Fellowship – A human connection that brings people together in love and community.
  • Belief – A theological connection rooted in Scripture and grace.
  • Mission – A purposeful connection through service to others and care for the world.
  • Practice – A structural connection that organizes our global efforts to serve faithfully and effectively.

Through this global network, United Methodists are often among the first responders to disasters and human need, offering compassion, relief, and long-term recovery in the name of Christ.

THINKING & LIVING FAITHFULLY

We honor our founder John Wesley’s approach to faith—an invitation to think deeply and live faithfully through the balanced use of Scripture, experience, reason, and tradition.

Wesley also offered three simple rules that guide the United Methodist way of life:

  1. Do no harm.
  2. Do good.
  3. Stay in love with God by practicing the means of grace—prayer, meditation, studying Scripture, public worship, receiving the sacraments, and participating in Holy Conferencing (honest and loving conversation among believers).

These principles shape our daily discipleship and remind us that faith is both personal and communal, both spiritual and practical.

OUR FOUR AREAS OF FOCUS

United Methodists across the globe are committed to making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We live out that mission through four key areas of focus:

  1. Developing principled Christian leaders for the church and the world.
  2. Creating new places for new people by starting new congregations and renewing existing ones.
  3. Engaging in ministry with the poor, meeting needs and fostering empowerment.
  4. Improving global health and helping to eliminate preventable diseases that claim lives every day.

Through these efforts, the United Methodist Church continues to share hope, promote justice, and embody Christ’s love in every corner of the world.

Together, we are part of something larger than ourselves: a movement of grace, connection, and hope. It is in our spiritual DNA to take an active stance in society is nothing new for followers of Jesus Christ formed steeped in the teachings of John Wesley. He set the example for us not to separate love of God from love of neighbor, worship and personal holiness from working for holiness in society. Methodists have always been known as a denomination involved with people's lives, including their political and social struggles. Such involvement is an expression of the personal change we experience in our baptism and conversion.
